Groups raise funds for injured Filipino biker in Qatar

MANILA, Philippines - Various Filipino and American groups raised funds totaling to QR 6,818 or more than P90,000 for an injured Filipino big bike rider in Qatar, an online report said.

The Peninsula reported that injured biker Melvin Yadao was teary-eyed when he received the ceremonial check showing the amount of money raised and signatures of support from those who joined the fund-raising drive.

The fund-raising drive spearheaded by Team Gorgatz, alongside Ako Taga Iloilo Prodaksyon (ATI) and Beats and Bytes, had reportedly drawn 19 other Filipino community organizations including Filipino journalists, photographers, restaurants, bands, vehicle dealers and a group of Americans called Harley Davidson Expat X-Riders.

Despite the short notice, the report said that hundreds turned up to join the campaign after learning that Yadao had to pay for his medicine and doctor’s fees because the accident happened on a non-working day, making it uncovered by his company’s expenses.

“We sent e-mails just a few days before and it was heartwarming that many already confirmed their attendance," said Adonis Canicato of ATI.

Yadao, a member of Qatar Pinoy Riders, sustained injuries from an accident he met when he was on his way home from the Losail International Circuit at the outskirts of Doha on February 13.

He broke his right arm and got six stitches on his fingers after the motorbike he was driving slammed into a gutter about a hundred meters near the Losail Circuit where he and his comrades volunteer as marshals during racing games.

He was rushed to Hamad Medical Center in Doha where he spent three days at the Intensive Care Unit and another five days at the ward.

He was advised by his doctor that he needs at least two to three months of rest before he can go back to work again. - Kimberly Jane T. Tan, GMANews.TV
