Pagbebenta ng dugo ng mga stranded at unemployed OFW sa Saudi Arabia, pinapaimbestigahan

Isang resolusyon ang inihain sa Kamara de Representantes para hilingin na imbestigahan ang umano’y pagbebenta ng dugo ng mga stranded at unemployed Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) sa Saudi Arabia para matustusan ang kanilang pangangailangan. Sa House Resolution (HR) No. 2542 na inihain nina Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez at Abante Mindanao party-list Rep. Maximo Rodriguez, Jr., hiniling nila sa House committee on overseas workers affairs, na imbestigahan ang naturang usapin. Nais ng dalawang kongresista na ipatawag ni Akbayan party-list Rep. Walden Bello, pinuno ng nabanggit na komite, ang mga opisyal ng Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), pati na ang Migrante Middle East at iba pang kainauukulang ahensiya. Batay umano sa impormasyon mula sa Migrante Middle East, tinatayang nasa 8,000 hanggang 10,000 undocumented OFWs ang nasa Saudi Arabia at walang hanapbuhay. Upang may maipangtustos sa kanilang pangangailangan at may maipadalang pera sa Pilipinas, napipilitan umano ang ilan sa kanila na magbenta ng dugo. "While there is nothing wrong with donating blood, it is quite different where donors are forced to do so in order to earn money and when their motive is to get money in exchange for the blood they donated," nakasaad sa resolusyon. "It is quite unfortunate that our OFWs are placed in a situation where their circumstances force them to resort to donating blood for money," dagdag ng mga kongresista. Sinasabing nasa 300 hanggang 500 Saudi Riyals per 500cc ng ibinibigay ng ilang ospital sa KSA para sa mga “nagdo-donate" ng dugo. Marami umano sa mga OFW ang nawalan ng trabaho matapos takasan ang kanilang abusadong mga amo o kaya naman ay hindi sila pinapasahod. "They are considered as illegal immigrants or TNT (tago ng tago) and undocumented because their passports and travel documents are lost or confiscated by their previous employers," ayon sa mga mambabatas. "Measures must be enacted to ensure that our OFWs no longer resort to selling blood in order to earn but, more importantly, they are protected when in a foreign country and have jobs readily available to them here and abroad," dagdag nila. STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy.
