Pinay housemaids in UAE to hold pageant for distressed OFWs

Filipino housemaids in Dubai will hold a beauty pageant on May 10, Friday, to help women domestic helpers in distress in the United Arab Emirates.

The maids, who belong to the "Kabayan Kapit Bisig" group based in Dubai, will hold the "Miss Kabayan Kapit Bisig (KKB) 2013" where the contestants are domestic helpers.

“We want to help distressed women, many of whom are maids who want to go back [home]. Funds raised from the event will be used to buy tickets for them. About 70 maids will participate and will be judged on the basis of their beauty, intelligence as well as work,” Zussie, leader of the Kabayan Kapit Bisig, said in an interview on Gulf News.

Proceeds of the pageant to be held in Deira will go to helping women who seek assistance from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office to buy tickets to return home.

The Gulf News report said contestants had been rehearsing catwalks and question-answer routines for the event.

But the organizers also said the event aims as well to boost the maids' confidence.

“If you come across a Filipina housemaid, you would be quick to notice that they feel they are lower than everyone else around them. They feel their work is not something that they can be proud of and usually have low confidence. In the months through the preparation, the members have emerged confident and the contest will play a good role in boosting their morale,” said Jaja, one of the judges.

Meanwhile, the group's members have been busy selling tickets for the event. — LBG, GMA News.
