Pinoys in HK warned vs. gold bar syndicate

Filipinos in Hong Kong were warned Monday against falling for a ploy by syndicates in Hong Kong and Bangkok supposedly dealing in illegal gold bar imports.

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong said the syndicates would recruit victims to act as couriers or "gold mules" to carry the gold bars for a certain fee.

"There are quite a number of Filipino nationals who have already been victimized by the Indian syndicates who were arrested by Indian authorities for gold smuggling upon arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai on 15 July 2014 and New Delhin Airport on 19 July 2014," it said in an advisory posted on its Facebook page.

It said the arrest of these Filipinos is "quite alarming" since the incidents indicate a new trend of Filipinos being recruited as mules for illegal gold imports for the Indian gold trade.

Citing initial information, the consulate general said the syndicates would offer the victims a certain fee that includes a roundtrip airfair from Hong Kong to India.

The consulate general urged Filipinos to report any offer via telephone at 9155-4023 or email at hongkongpc@philcongen-hk.com. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
