60 Pinoys convicted for possessing stunning devices in HK in 2014

At least 60 Filipinos, most of them seafarers, had been convicted in Hong Kong in 2014 for possession of unlicensed arms such as stunning devices, Philippine officials there said Tuesday.

With this, the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong reminded Filipinos traveling or transiting Hong Kong not to bring restricted items such as stunning devices.

It said this policy applies to Filipino travelers transiting or entering Hong Kong as visitors, workers or residents.

"Stun guns and other devices such as tear gas, bullets, extendible batons, flick knives and knuckle dusters are considered 'arms' under the Firearms and Ammunition Ordinance of Hong Kong, and their unlicensed possession is upon conviction punishable by a fine of HK$100,000 and/or a maximum sentence of 14 years' imprisonment," it said.

Filipinos should not bring such items in their handcarried or checked-in luggage, it said.

The consulate general said Hong Kong authorities are strict with the enforcement of this ordinance, and all handcarried and checked-in luggage are subjected to security screening in airport terminals.  Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
