Cargo ship with all-Filipino crew members sinks off Vietnam

A Bahaman ship Bulk Jupiter with all-Filipino crew members sank on Friday in the East Vietnam Sea, some 150 nautical miles off southern Vung Tau City.

News site Tuoitrenews.com reported the vessel sank for "unknown reasons" with all the 19 Filipino crew members aboard during the incident.

Personnel of the Vietnam Maritime Rescue Cooperation Center (MRCC) rescued one and recovered two bodies of the crew members, the report said.

Also, it said the seafarers sent emergency signals at 11:30 a.m. on January 2.

The search for the other crew members of the ill-fated ship carrying 46,400 tons of iron ores from Malaysia to China, is ongoing.

Meanwhile, GMA News TV's "Balitanghali" reported that three Filipinos are believed killed in the sinking indicent.

The report quoted Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Asec. Charles Jose as saying the Philippine Embassy in Hanoi is coordinating with Vietnam authorities to gather more information about the sinking of Bulk Jupiter.

"As always, we stand ready to extend all necessary and appropriate assistance to the ship's Filipino crew members and their families," said Jose in a statement.

According to the vice president and head of shipping of Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, the management company of the Filipino seafarers, reports on the sinking have already been filed with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and Department of Labor and Employment. —Rie Takumi and Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
