Requirements on hiring domestic helpers in UAE may be relaxed soon –report
Philippine officials in the United Arab Emirates may soon ease some conditions for hiring Filipina domestic helpers, a UAE news site reported Tuesday.
A report on Khaleej Times cited an executive at a recruitment agency who said the Philippine embassy may ease such requirements in the next 10 days.
Citing information from the recruitment agencies, the report said some conditions the Philippine embassy may relax includes the attestation of contracts.
"The cost of bringing in and hiring a Filipina housemaid rose more than double as was over the past years, and accounted for a whopping Dh14,500, and the monthly salary of the housemaid shot up to more than Dh1,500,” said the recruitment firm executive.
She added the housemaid will get one weekday off and will work for eight hours a day, with hourly cash allowances for overtime.
Since April 2014, the Philippine embassy had suspended bringing and hiring domestic helpers into the UAE.
Ali Essa Al Nuaimi, a member of the Federal National Council, said resuming sending Filipino domestic helpers to the UAE is an internal matter for the Philippine government.
But he said the UAE Ministry of Interior insists on the unified labor contract decision, which seeks to regularize the relationship between the employee and employers.
"The persistence of the Filipino government on attesting the labor contracts of the domestic helpers within its embassy in the UAE and pre-review of the contracts is an unacceptable intervention on the domestic policies of the UAE ministries," he said. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
