At least 2 Pinoys among new MERS-CoV cases in Saudi

At least two Filipinos were among the new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Ministry of Health said.

In its March 2 report, the MOH said the new cases were confirmed following a checking conducted February 22 to 28. It said the patients' ages ranged from 24 to 91.

The report said the patients included nine Saudis, three Yemenis, three Filipinos, two Indians, and one Egyptian, one Sudanese and one Syrian, for a total of 20 new cases.

separate report on Saudi-based Arab News said there were only two Filipinos and one Indian, which add up to 18.

Of the 18 new cases, 12 were recorded in Riyadh and one each in Al-Ihsa, Khobar, Jeddah, Najran, Buraida, and Al-Jouf, the MOH report said, adding the new cases were from 1,493 samples of coronavirus tested at MOH's laboratories.

The 18 confirmed cases included 13 males and five females. Six cases were monitored in the private sector, six in the MOH, two in the National Guard Hospital, three in the university hospitals and one in the Military Hospital, it added.

Rapid response teams

The MOH also said rapid response teams tasked to fight infection at health facilities paid 26 field visits, including initial and follow-up tours, during the last week.

Preventive Medicine and Health Awareness Teams affiliated with the MOH visited 10 houses and listed 63 people in contact with patients, given that they have been placed under regular follow-up up to the end of the virus incubation period.

The MOH said its Command and Control Center continues to carry out epidemiological surveillance tasks, making sure that all governmental and private health facilities are applying infection control measures.

It also makes sure they are coordinating with the relevant government sectors, international Health organizations, including World Health Organization (WHO), and consulting firms to follow up all developments regarding Coronavirus. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
