UAE court hears case vs. Pinoy charged for robbing cabbie

A United Arab Emirates this week heard a case against a Filipino who was charged with verbally abusing a taxi driver and stealing his cash and mobile phone last year.

The Filipino, 25, was arrested and charged before the Court of First Instance for the supposed acts, UAE news site Khaleej Times reported Wednesday.

During the hearing on the incident that occurred March 28 last year, the Pakistani cabbie, 26, said the Filipino took his mobile phone and Dh2,360 cash.

He said the Filipino and a companion – another Filipino – got into his cab from a gas station in Al Hudaiba. He dropped them off at Al Jafliyah and was paid Dh10.

“But before the accused stepped out of the car’s front seat, he snatched my mobile phone,” he said.

When he told the Filipino to return the phone, the Filipino instead flashed the dirty finger at him, then punched him. The two Filipinos then fled.

“I stepped out, but he punched me on my face. His friend snatched Dh2,360 from my shirt’s pocket and punched me several times,” the driver told the prosecutor.

However, police acting on a tip arrested one of the Filipinos.

The next hearing will be on March 10.  Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
