20 New OWWA-CAR Scholars attended a Seminar on “Embracing College Life"
Twenty (20) new scholars of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in the Cordillera Administrative Region under the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) and the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP) for the school year 2015 – 2016 attended a one-day seminar on “Embracing College Life” conducted on May 13, 2015 conducted at the OWWA-RWO CAR Training Hall in Baguio City.  The parents and/ or guardians of the new scholars also joined the seminar.
 
Ms. Evelyn C. Laranang, OIC- Regional Director of OWWA-CAR welcomed and congratulated the new OWWA Scholars and their parents/ guardians.  A special mention and recognition was given to   Mr. Ian Chester Tungpalan for being the topnotcher of the national examination administered by the DOST-SEI for the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP).  Mr. Tungpalan was a Validectorian of his graduating class at Saint Louis High School in Poblacion, Flora Apayao.
 
Ms. Laranang also mentioned that being an OWWA  scholar is a great privilege but at the same time it is a big responsibility.  It is a great privilege considering that only  few OFW dependents  could qualify and  pass  the qualifying examinations being given to applicants.  Further, there are very limited slots allocated annually, only 200 slots for EDSP and 44 slots for CMWSP.  On the other hand, it is also a big responsibility because it is expected of the scholars to abide by the terms and conditions stipulated on the scholarship agreement, among others, the maintenance of a minimum grade of at least 80%. 
 
Topics discussed during the seminar include Career CoachingLabor Market Information, Hard to fill in Jobs, Prospects and Opportunities under Science and Technology courses, Life skills Orientation.  In addition, the terms and conditions of the scholarship agreement were also presented them.  Resource Persons were Ms. Romelda Frances Escaño of PESO Baguio City, Director Marlene De Castro of BCYA, Ms.  Marites Banaña of DOST, and Mr. Isaac Anthony Basil of OWWA.
 
The participants examined and identified their selected chosen courses by answering questionnaires presented by Ms. Maritess Banaña of DOST-CAR.  Ms. Banaña led and guided the scholars to choose the best course which they want to pursue to avoid any possible unwanted shifting of courses or drop outs.
 
There were also a group activities participated in both by the scholar and the parents/ or guardians whereby they were asked to identify their common values that they treasured most.  Common responses were identified, the participants were able to classify and recognize what they value most, i.e. their Family (as it is the foundation of their well-being), education, life, experiences which they encounter.  Some of the parents mentioned that they value most of their God given children.
 
The scholarship agreement was presented and queries pertinent thereto were answered.   In addition, processing of the Fund request and the documents needed for the release of the financial grants were also discussed.

Ms. Romelda F. Escano, PESO Officer-Baguio City lecturing on Labor market and hard-to-fill in jobs.

Ms. Maritess Banaña (DOST-CAR) discussed what are the Science and Technology courses and employment opportunities of the courses.

Ms. Marlene De Castro (BCYA) enlightened the scholars the need to know more about themselves and the spiritual well –being of every individual.

Mr. Isaac Anthony Basil (OIC-PSD) discussing the enumerated terms and conditions of the scholarship agreement contract.
