Beware of retweeted and shared ‘POEA-approved’ jobs, OFWs advised

If that supposed "POEA-approved" job offer was retweeted or shared, better think twice before applying.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration issued the warning on Sunday as it advised prospective overseas Filipino workers to verify such offers reposted on social media.

"Mag-ingat sa mga post, re-post, tweet at retweet na nasasagap o kinakalat sa social media, patungkol sa mga 'POEA-approved jobs' kuno," POEA head Hans Leo Cacdac said.

He also offered tips on how to deal with job offers posted and re-posted online:

- Be skeptical: Verify first the job offers posted on social media, email, or the Internet.

- Do not send money to those offering jobs online.

- Make sure the recruiter is licensed with the POEA. Ask for the agency's POEA license number. You can check with the POEA, DOLE or OWWA, and partner agencies such as the DFA, DOJ, Bureau of Immigration, PNP, and NBI. The POEA hotlines are 7221144 and 7221155. You can also check the POEA recruiter search engine at www.poea.gov.ph. Also, you can check with the POEA mobile phone app or its Facebook and Twitter accounts.

- Check the contact information of the recruiter. The POEA has a list of licensed recruiters' officials.

Even if the recruiter is licensed, Cacdac said the OFW should seek a personal meeting and not be satisfied if the recruiter tries to deal via social media, email or Internet.

The meeting should be at the recruiter's office, he added.

Meanwhile, Cacdac said OFWs should not leave the country without a contract, work visa, and POEA exit clearance.

"Tandaan po: hindi lahat ng nasa social media, email o internet ay totoo," he added.  Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
