Pinoy missing after falling off container ship in NZ –reports

A 52-year-old Filipino fell overboard from a ship in New Zealand as it docked at Lyttelton Harbour, online reports said Thursday.

The Filipino reportedly fell from The Madinah, a container ship, as it was approximately 3.5 kilometers away from the port entrance, according to a report on TVNZ.

Coastguard and 16 other vessels are searching for the Filipino with the help of eight more vessels assisting in a creepline search along the harbor.

separate report on Stuff.co.nz said a hard hat and gloves were found 30 meters from each other in the water two hours after the incident happened.

Because of the incident, all traffic in the harbor was halted and boats were prevented from leaving or docking in the area.

Citing an online database, Stuff reported that The Madinah left Port Chalmers, Dunedin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The ship is leased by Orient Overseas Container Line and was registered in Hong Kong.

A police spokesman said it will be brought to port for investigation while a spokesman for OOCL said they could not comment without more information on the incident. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
