Pinoy overcomes swim fear, saves 4 from drowning in UAE

A Filipino singlehandedly saved four people from drowning in Jumeirah in the United Arab Emirates last weekend, a UAE news site reported late Tuesday.

Despite his fear of swimming in the open sea, Alvin Pancito, 30, saved the four people swept by the sea at 2 a.m., Gulf News reported.

“To be honest, I’m really scared of the sea. I have been so since that happened to my sister. But on Saturday, there was no time to think. I just had to go and help them in whatever way I can,” he said.

The report said Pancito was at the beach for a midnight picnic when he heard screams for help.

He said some onlookers feared swimming in the rough seas, but added he could not ignore the calls for help.

“I initially thought he was just exercising. Then all of a sudden he jumped out of the water with one woman on each side,” said his friend Bryan Javier, who saw the event.

After saving the women, he then reached a third man, who appeared to be an Arab. He swam back and saved a fourth person, a woman who had lost consciousness.

Pancito said he did not get the contact details of the four victims.

He added he did this because he recalled an incident 13 years ago, when his sister was close to drowning in the sea and there was no one to help.

"I saw her almost lifeless but I managed to reach her and take her to safety,” he said. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
