Half-Pinay chemistry grad crowned Miss Earth England

A half-Filipina beauty queen from South West London will represent England in the prestigious Miss Earth 2015 pageant in Austria after winning a spot at the qualifiers last August 29.

Katrina Kendall, a half-Filipino and half-British graduate from the University of Edinburgh, also earned a special distinction for having the best online profile in the competition.

According to her profile, Kendall, 25, received a First Class Honors Masters in Chemistry and a First Class grade for creating a chemical for hydrogen storage for a renewable energy source and for her research in Switzerland.

In 2010 to 2011, only one in six or 15.5 percent of undergraduates at UK universities received First Class degrees, which are only awarded to graduates with high academic achievement.

Kendall's research team was also featured in L'Illustre Magazine, a French language magazine published in Switzerland, under an article titled "The Future Starts Here".

She also earned an A in her General Certificate of Secondary Education (GSCE) in music, and beat over 3,000 entries to represent London in the 2007 Young Enterprise Award.

The beauty queen aspires to use her position to empower others through "education and by raising environmental awareness", especially to younger generations.

"It is our duty to our planet and children to educate ourselves about our origins, environment and the role we play. This will help to open our eyes to the damage ignorance causes and drive us to change for a sustainable future," Kendall wrote.

She, along with representatives from Wales, North Ireland, and Scotland, will represent Team UK at the finals in Austria on December 5. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
