No Filipino casualty in Turkey quake - DFA

There were no Filipino casualties reported in the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday.

"The Philippine Embassy in Ankara informed the DFA that there is no reported injury or casualty among Filipinos during the earthquake that hit the province of Elazig in Eastern Turkey," DFA spokesperson Eduardo Malaya said in a text message to GMANews.TV.

"Most of the Filipinos, who number some 5,500, reside in the city of Istanbul and nearby areas," he added.

As of 2008, the Commission on Filipinos Overseas estimates there are 5,444 Filipinos in Turkey.

Of the figure, 82 are recorded by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration as overseas Filipino workers. - Jerrie Abella/KBK, GMANews.TV

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
