Pinoy teacher in China seeking gov't help after he was made to work illegally

Published May 10, 2021 5:43pm A Filipino teacher in China is seeking assistance after he found out that he had been working illegally and his papers tampered with. advertisement According to Oscar Oida's report on "Balitanghali" on Monday, Aliomar Apad is a registered overseas Filipino worker under the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration. He was deployed to China by a licensed recruitment agency. Apad was supposed to work as a teacher in a school in Yantai. However, upon arriving in the country, his Chinese employer took his passport and other documents. Instead of being deployed in Yantai, he was assigned to a school in Weifang province. Apad believed he was working there legally until there came a time when he was asked to hide due to a police check in the school. "Noong time na 'yon kinakabahan po ako kasi bakit ako nagtatago eh legal ako," Apad said. He immediately resigned after he found out he that his employment was anomalous. "Noong nag-resign ako, hindi binigay kasi kailangan ko raw magbayad ng 50,000 Chinese Yuan or P350,000," Apad said. When his contract ended in January, he immediately resigned from the school. But when the school returned his passport, the valid residence permit was torn. Apad is still in China but is unable to work. He is currently staying with his friends. Ambassador to China Chito Sta. Romana said the embassy would help Apad. The POEA added that the recruitment agency would be held liable. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/NB, GMA News
