Filipina domestic helper in Saudi Arabia mauled by employer over missing mixer part

A Filipina domestic helper was maltreated and mauled by her employer over a missing mixer part in Saudi Arabia, according to Jun Veneracion’s “24 Oras” report on Tuesday. Aibelle Poniente's female employer hit her with a figurine, kicked and dragged her when she found out that a part of the mixer to be used for baking was missing on October 23. "Nung binubugbog ako ni madam, nakikiusap ako na hindi ako makahinga pero patuloy pa rin siya na sinisipa ako," she said. With the help of fellow overseas Filipino workers, Poniente was able to escape and reported the incident to the Philippine Consulate in Jeddah. Poniente will pursue her complaint against her employer, even as the latter's husband tried to settle the matter. Rencelino Poniente, husband of the Filipina helper, was enraged over the maltreatment of his wife. "Napakabigat para sa isang lalaki, lalong-lalo na, sa aking wala akong nagawa dahil malayo po s'ya," Rencelino said. The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said it will pursue the case of Poniente and determine the sanctions to be meted to her employment agency if found violating. “POEA will monitor this case and coordinate with the agency which deployed the OFW. In case of violation, proper sanctions will be imposed,” POEA Administrator Bernard Olalia said. The agency said it will give legal assistance to the OFW to process her repatriation. Meanwhile, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said he would meet with his counterpart from Saudi Arabia to discuss the unpaid wages and benefits of some 9,000 OFWs. Bello added that if the issues will not be resolved, he will recommend a deployment ban of OFWs in Saudi Arabia.—Richa Noriega/LDF, GMA News
