Arroyo to discuss rights, job prospects in Bahrain
02/03/2009
MANILA, Philippines - President Arroyo will discuss rights of Filipino workers in Bahrain while pushing for more job opportunities during her visit there Tuesday.
Online news site Khaleej Times reported that Philippine embassy councilor general Jose Burgos said the talks will involve the rights of some 40,000 Filipinos.
"We have only less than 3,000 Filipino domestic workers and we are moving to reduce the number as the focus is on posts with high salaries," Burgos said.
He added that after restrictions were imposed on the recruitment of domestic workers from the Philippines, the embassy has been receiving less complaints from the labor force in Bahrain.
"Maids' contributions to national economy are much less than other overseas workers, so working in Philippines is better than migrating to foreign countries and exposed to maltreatment," he added.
Also, Burgos said Arroyo will meet with members of the Filipino community to discuss their needs and future plans. - GMANews.TV
