A magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook parts of Mindanao this Sunday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The epicenter of the quake was recorded 6 kilometers northwest of Padada town in Davao del Sur, according to Phivolcs.
It was followed by another earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.2, in Matanao, Davao del Sur around 3:03 p.m., Phivolcs said.
Malacañang urged the public to remain calm but cautious for possible aftershocks.
The Palace also assured the public that it has mobilized government agencies to respond to the needs of those affected by the earthquake.
President Rodrigo Duterte was in Davao City when the quake struck but Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo assured that the chief executive, as well as his family, are safe.
There was also a brownout in a part of Davao City after an electric transformer exploded.
People also came out of Gaisano Mall in Bajada, Davao City when they felt the quake.
In Padada, Davao del Sur, four people were injured when a market wall collapsed.
The building of a grocery store in the town also collapsed.
In Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, 14 people were rescued after sustaining minor injuries, according to municipal disaster officer Anthony Allada.
Aftershocks continue to be experienced in some parts of Mindanao.
Some areas in Mindanao canceled classes for Monday, December 16, following the earthquake.
