The Philippine Consulate General in New York said it is coordinating with state authorities to check if Filipinos were among the victims of a shooting incident in a subway station in Brooklyn that left around 16 people injured.
Consulate General Elmer Cato on Twitter said his office has yet to receive further information on the status of the victims as the investigation of the incident is still ongoing.
“The Philippine Consulate General in New York has inquired with authorities if there are Filipinos among the wounded or injured and has been told that the nationalities of victims are still not known,” said Cato.
According to a report from Agence-France Presse, multiple people were shot while at least 16 were injured after a still unidentified suspect opened fire during the morning rush hour at the 36th Street Subway Station in Brooklyn. Undetonated explosive devices were also found at the crime scene.
Several media reports said police were hunting for a man in a gas mask and orange construction vest as the suspect remains at large hours after the tragic incident.
With this, Cato reminded Filipinos living in New York to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions "as the suspect is on the loose."
He said his office is now working with the Filipino community in monitoring the status of Filipinos in Brooklyn which he said currently houses 8,764 Pinoys.—LDF, GMA News
