DFA: SUV driver who hit group of Pinoy bikers in Kuwait surrendered --- By GISELLE OMBAY, GMA Integrated News

The driver of the SUV that plowed into a group of Filipino bikers in Kuwait has already surrendered to authorities, a Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) official said on Sunday. DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said the driver may face charges if proven that he or she was recklessly driving at the time of the accident involving around 50 Pinoy bikers. “'Yung driver, nag-surrender na. Hindi pa malinaw kung ano sinabi pero tingin natin Kuwaiti. Kusang loob nag-surrender na sa mga pulis kaya iniimbestigahan ng Kuwaiti government, tinitignan ‘yung mga films ng accident,” he said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview. (The driver has surrendered. It is still unclear what was said but we think s/he is Kuwaiti. S/he voluntarily surrendered to the police, so the Kuwaiti government is investigating and is reviewing the films of the accident.) De Vega said that the SUV swerved and hit the group of bikers who were reportedly on the bike lane. Eleven of the victims were brought to two hospitals, according to him. Of them, seven were already discharged, two are still under observation, while the other two are seemingly under a critical condition. “'Yung dalawa medyo grabe. ‘Yung isa, head injuries, ‘yung isa back injuries,” he added. (The two victims have pretty bad injuries—one was on the head, while the other one on the back. ) De Vega further pointed out that many bikers were already involved in an accident in Kuwait due to lack of bike lanes in the country. —KG, GMA Integrated News

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday. STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. Latest monitoring by the Philippine Navy showed armed ships of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) maintaining a menacing presence around the grounded BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal, Panatag Shoal and Escoda Shoal.
