Vietnamese cargo ship runs aground in Palawan, 17 rescued ABS-CBN News

MANILA — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Philippine National Police Maritime Group (PNP MARIG) on Wednesday rescued 17 crew members of Vietnamese-flagged cargo vessel Viet Hai Star in the waters off Balabac, Palawan. According to the PCG, Viet Hai Star was carrying 4,000 tons of rice when it ran aground approximately 810 yards (around 740 meters) off Balabac Port. It departed Ho Chi Minh City and was going to Cagayan de Oro City when the crew discovered a leak on the starboard side of the bow. The joint search and rescue team was able to bring the 17 crew members to the Balabac port early morning Wednesday. The PCG's Marine Environmental Protection Unit said it did not detect any oil leaks or spills from the damaged ship. The PCG also reported that as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, the Vietnamese vessel was already half submerged.

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
