Published   November 6, 2019, 11:23 AM By Jun Ramirez The Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced Wednesday it would resume stamping on the regular e-passports of nationals from the People’s Republic of China (PROC) on their arrival and departure. Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente (ALI VICOY / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) The practice of stamping on Chinese passports was stopped in 2012 at the height of the country’s territorial dispute with China in the West Philippine Sea. This stemmed from the move then of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to place Philippine Visas of Chinese nationals on a separate sheet of paper. The DFA adopted the policy after China introduced a new e-passport with pages that included the historic nine-dash line map where it bases its claim to the disputed islands. In a memorandum issued by BI Commissioner Jaime Morente, immigration officers in the different ports may now affix their stamps adjacent to the Philippine...

HK’s economic woes deepen with falling business outlook

Hong Kong―Hong Kong’s economic woes showed no sign of easing Wednesday after a key measure of business confidence fell to its lowest level in more than a decade as the city reels from the global trade war and violent democracy protests. The Purchasing Managers Index―which measures the health of the private sector―dropped to 39.3 in October, its worst reading since 2008 during the global financial crisis, heaping fresh misery on the unrest-plagued city. The international financial center has been plunged into a recession by the fallout from the China-US trade war and five months of seething pro-democracy protests that Beijing has taken a hard-line approach against. IHS Markit, which surveys around 400 private companies to build the PMI dataset, said business activity was now falling at its fastest rate on record. The latest reading is well below the 50 level that separates growth from contraction and is also sharply down from the 41.5 seen in September. “The ongoing ...

DFA: File protest vs China incursion now!

October 02, 2019 By Cristina Lee-Pisco People's Tonight FOREIGN Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. yesterday ordered the filing of a diplomatic protest against China following the reported presence of Chinese vessels near Ayungin Shoal. “I’m in Moscow. Do I have to fly home to file the goddamned diplomatic protest myself? File now!” Locsin tweeted. Locsin’s reaction came after  the Philippine military reported that some Chinese vessels sailed near Second Thomas Shoal or the Ayungin Shoal. The area is being manned by Filipino soldiers aboard the BRP Sierra Madre. Armed Forces Chief of Staff Noel Clement was quoted as saying that “the mere presence there, if there is no request for passage prior to that, will have to be reported.” However, Clement added whether it is a violation or not “will be up to our Department of Foreign Affairs.” Locsin replied to the story on the Defense officials’ confirmation that a Chinese Coast Guard vessel was s...
