OFW killed in CNMI hit-and-run incident
SADOG TASI, Saipan – A 41-year-old Filipino contract worker in the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) was killed in a hit-and-run early Sunday morning.
Police identified the male victim as Grande C. Nonan who was pronounced dead at 5:25 a.m. on Sunday at the Commonwealth Health Center after suffering head trauma and extensive lacerations on his upper and lower body.
According to a witness, Nonan was walking uphill using the eastbound shoulder of a road when a sports utility vehicle ran off the highway, hitting Nonan.
The female witness, who was walking several feet behind Nonan, was saved from being hit by the speeding vehicle because she was able to dart toward a fence line.
The vehicle fled from the scene after hitting Nonan.
Nonan is the third traffic fatality so far this year in the CNMI, which is home to about 10,000 documented contract workers from the Philippines.
CNMI police said at the time of the collision, the weather was clear and the road surface, including the shoulder of the highway, was dry.
The NMI Crime Stoppers Program is offering up to $1,000 cash reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest of the driver of the vehicle which struck Nonan.
Police said the vehicle was described as a beige or dark brown SUV. - Haidee Eugenio, GMANews.TV
