New OFW party eyes party-list seat in 2010 polls

MANILA, Philippines - A national party of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) will join the 2010 Philippine elections for a party-list seat in Congress.

A statement from the Partidong Pandaigdigang Pilipino (PPP) on Monday said the group was formed to act as representative of OFWs who despite their large number, have no voice in any state policies and regulations that affect overseas Pinoys.

The PPP will not only be an electoral party, but a party that “will work for good governance, political empowerment, and development projects, particularly on the barangay (village) level," according to Grace Cabactulan, convenor of the non-government Global Filipino Nation, a member of the party.

Cabactulan said that PPP had been trying to establish links with national and international alliances to resolve issues affecting Filipinos, especially migrants, OFWs, and their families.

PPP chapters have been formed in the Middle East particularly in Riyadh and Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Chapters in Morocco, Israel, Singapore, United States, Australia, Kuwait, Palau, France, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands are still waiting to be formed.

PPP’s National Capital Region chapter has been tasked to register the party with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commission on Elections. - Kimberly Jane T. Tan, GMANews.TV
