MANILA, Philippines—The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has transferred to the Bureau of Immigration the custody of a Pakistani national suspected of being a human trafficker and illegal recruiter.
In a report to Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan, BI Law Enforcement Division acting chief Wilfredo Poquez said Pakistani Abdul Ali Rheman a.k.a. Ali Latik, 45, has been moved from the NBI detention to BI jail in Bicutan.
Rheman was arrested and deported seven years ago, but he returned to the Philippines and was arrested again by NBI authorities last May 18 following complaints that he has been recruiting Filipinos with a promise of high-paying jobs in Australia.
Poquez said the Pakistani was allowed to post bail by the court but NBI officials decided to transfer him to the BI after finding out that the suspect is an overstaying and undocumented alien.
Investigation later revealed that Rehman was first arrested by BI agents in 1997 and was allowed to post bail in 2000.
In 2002 he was issued a summary deportation order by the BI for being an illegally staying alien.
He had since been at large until his recent arrest, but BI officials said he could not be deported yet pending resolution of the criminal complaint for illegal recruitment and estafa that was filed against him by the NBI before the Quezon City court.
