Recruiter duping Canada-bound nurses falls

MANILA, Philippines — An alleged illegal recruiter offering nursing jobs in Canada was arrested in a police sting operation in Bacolod City Thursday, an online news site reported Friday.

Visayan Daily Star (www.visayandailystar.com) reported that Suzette Cervantes, 55, of Talisay City in Negros Occidental, was arrested in a fast-food outlet in Bacolod City.

Cervantes had been the subject of several complaints by jobseekers whom she promised jobs as nurses in Canada, in exchange for P2,000 in processing fees.

Investigation showed Cervantes introduced herself to victims as a representative of a travel agency based in Quezon City since last year.

She would promised them jobs as nurses in Canada, and that she would process their NCLEX examination in exchange for some amount.

Police said one complainant even gave Cervantes P200,000 in checks on staggered basis, while others gave her cash ranging from P4,000 to P9,500.

A check with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration showed Cervantes was never authorized to recruit for jobs abroad.

Two of Cervantes’former companions, Charlotte Villecena, 24, of Talisay City, Negros Occidental; and Josephine Catulang, 38, of Bacolod City, will stand as witnesses against her, said the report. - GMANews.TV
