HK-based OFWs stage rally vs. APEC
HONG KONG—Some 20 overseas Filipino workers held a rally at the Philippine Consulate General on Wednesday to slam the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, calling it the "peddler of imperialist globalization."
"APEC is a big part of the reason why we OFWs are slaving away and are being abused in foreign countries. APEC means further underdevelopment of poor countries in the region. APEC means more forced labor migration," said Dolores Balladares- Pelaez, chairperson of the United Filipinos in Hong Kong.

Timed for the start of APEC leaders' meeting in Manila on Wednesday, the protest action also slammed the lavish spending of the Philippine government for the security, dinner, and fanfare to entertain the world leaders.
Meanwhile, Vicy Casia-Cabantac, chairperson of the Migrante Sectoral Party (MSP), also criticized the Beningo Aquino III's administration for earmarking P10 billion for the hosting of APEC meetings in several venues in the country.
Ironically, she said the administration has allotted only P10 million for overseas voting registration for some 10 million overseas Filipino voters.
"The 10-billion peso budget could have been better used to fund the country's social programs, including those that provide services to overseas Filipino workers. But is is [squandered] in the meeting of economic plunderers that will lay the whole region to waste through more neoliberal prescriptions," Cabantac said. — LBG, GMA News
