BALI - President Rodrigo Duterte arrived in Indonesia on Wednesday night for the ASEAN Leaders' Conference.
The President touched down at the Bali International Airport via a Bombardier Challenger Class private jet at 9:09 p.m., coming from Maguindanao where he visited the wake of 5 Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency personnel who were recently killed in an ambush.
Duterte was welcomed upon arrival by Indonesian Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita, Indonesian Ambassador to the Philippines Sinyo Sarundajang, Philippine Ambassador Leehiong Wee, and Ambassador Elizabeth Buensuceso, Permanent Representative to the Philippine Mission to ASEAN.
The President brought with him a delegation composed of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Cayetano, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno Socioeconomic Secretary Ernesto Pernia, Special Assistant to the President Christopher "Bong" Go, and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar.
Duterte will meet Thursday afternoon with 9 other ASEAN leaders in an informal roundtable that is expected to last for 2 and a half hours.
International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres are expected to attend the meeting as well.
The gathering is being held on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB), which will also be hosted by Indonesia.
Malacañang said Duterte will get the chance to address the leaders in the meeting and that he will highlight the need to sustain inclusive and sustainable growth and development for all, through stronger regional and global cooperation and greater security and stability.
He is also expected to have several "pull-aside meetings" with ASEAN leaders, including President Joko Widodo.
Both leaders are expected to talk about several issues of mutual concern, including terrorism.
Duterte is also likely to formally hand over the Philippine government’s US $300,000 (P16 million) donation for the recovery and rehabilitation of the city of Palu, which was struck by a massive earthquake and tsunami around two weeks ago.
The Philippines also sent on Wednesday its donation of medical kits, water, and power generators to Indonesia.
The President’s trip in Bali will be short as he is expected to fly back to Davao immediately after the event’s gala dinner Thursday night.
