Migrante Int'l welcomes court ruling allowing Mary Jane Veloso's testimony
Overseas Filipino workers (OFW) group Migrante International on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court's ruling which allowed death row inmate Mary Jane Veloso to testify against her alleged recruiters in Indonesia.
The court's ruling on Friday would allow Veloso "to bring light to the horrors" of her experience, Migrante said in a statement.
"Our hopes are now high that with Mary Jane’s presentation of her written testimony, it shall make way for that much awaited moment when she will be finally reunited with her loved ones in the Philippines," the statement read.
"Migrante International is grateful to all those who stood by with the Veloso family right from the beginning up to this latest phase in her family’s legal battle here in the Philippines," it added.
Also according to Migrante, Veloso's testimony would allow the Philippine and Indonesian governments to examine the victimization of "unsuspecting migrant workers and travels."
It would also serve as a precedent for OFWs who may also find themselves the victims of human trafficking and illegal recruitment.
The final court hearing was set by the Nueva Ecija Regional Trial Court on October 28.
Veloso was sentenced to executed after she was caught with 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her baggage at Yogyakarta airport in 2010.
However, Veloso claimed she was tricked by her recruiters. — Joahna Lei Casilao/DVM, GMA News
