Iranian beauty queen’s asylum bid still under study
October 28, 2019
THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) yesterday said that the application for political asylum of Iranian beauty queen Bahareh Zare Bahari, who was listed in the Interpol’s “red notice,” is still “being considered.”
“Since her application for asylum is being considered, the DFA has no comment on this matter,” Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Eduardo Meñez said in a viber message.
Bahari competed in the 2018 Miss Intercontinental beauty pageant held at the Mall of Asia Arena early this year.
She applied for asylum on October 17, shortly after Philippine immigration authorities at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) told her she should be deported back to Tehran for a warrant issued by the Interpol.
The Iranian beauty queen was facing assault and battery charges in Tehran.
Bahari denied the charges saying she is being targeted for her political activism and for speaking out in support of women’s rights.
The beauty queen is now under the custody of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in its facility in Bicutan.
