Leaders guarantee OFWs' safety if violence erupts in Mideast -envoy
Middle East leaders have vowed to ensure the safety of the nearly two million Filipinos should a serious security problem flare up in the region, a Philippine government official said Saturday.
Presidential Adviser on OFW and Muslim Concerns Abdullah Mama-o told GMA News Online that leaders in Kuwait, Iran, Qatar, and Iraq vowed the safety of OFWs during consultations with some Philippine foreign officials.
President Rodrigo Duterte sent Mama-o to the Middle East to talk with leaders and ask for assistance for the safety of OFWs in the event of an outbreak of violence.
Mama-o is accompanied by Undersecretary Edwin Bael, and Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait Mohd Noordin Pendosina Lomondot in meeting with Mideast leaders.
Aside from giving protection and ensure the safety of OFWS, Qatar offered to become a halfway hub of OFWs fleeing from troubled parts of the Middle East.
"The State of Qatar will protect the Filipino workers and if there is a need for them to return to the country, it will provide exit passes for Filipino expatiates, and it is also willing to be made the hub of all Filipino workers from other parts of region," Mama-o said. —Ronaldo Concha/LBG, GMA News
