Unemployment up to 4.5% in June Read Next Magnitude 5.3 earthquake rocks Davao Oriental --- By Niña Myka Pauline Arceo

UNEMPLOYMENT rose to 4.5 percent in June from a month earlier, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on Wednesday. Following a decline for three consecutive months, the June figure is higher than the 4.3 percent a month earlier but lower than June 2022's 6.0 percent. This translates to 2.33 million unemployed Filipinos, 159,000 higher than May's 2.17 million. It is, however, a decrease from 2.99 million in June last year to 2.33 million, reflecting a year-on-year drop of 663,000 unemployed individuals. Meanwhile, underemployment — which counts those looking for more work or an extra job — rose to 12.0 percent from 11.7 percent in May, but slightly lower than June 2022's underemployment rate at 12.6 percent. The number of underemployment is equivalent to 5.87 million persons "who expressed the desire to have additional hours of work in their present job or to have additional jobs, or to have a new job with long hours of work."
