Jullebee Ranara's kin yet to receive compensation from her employer —DFA exec By ANNA FELICIA BAJO, GMA Integrated News

(We are waiting for the decision because it is supposed to have compensatory damages. The decision should indicate how much the accused should pay to the victim's family.) De Vega said Ranara's family has already been informed of the accused's conviction and that they are grateful for the case's outcome. He, however, said the family were expecting the accused to get a life sentence. De Vega said it was explained to the family that since the accused is a minor, the sentence was reduced to 15 years in prison for murder and that he also received a one-year prison sentence for driving without license. "Parang inisip nila 'yung life imprisonment pero noong napaliwanag na hindi naman naabswelto at saka may hustisya, kunyari tayo mismo sa ating batas, exempted 'yung mga menor de edad from criminal liability as a general rule. So naintindihan pa rin nila," De Vega said. (They thought the sentence would be life imprisonment but it was explained to them that justice was still served. Just like in our country, minors are exempted from criminal liability. So they understood that.) "Iniintay lang nila 'yung moral damages. Alam natin buhay ang nawala eh. They are grateful na may hustisya pero siyempre... karumal-dumal 'yung pagkapatay kay Jullebee kaya para sa kanila siyempre hindi naman mababalik eh, kahit na ba anong imprisonment hindi na mababalik 'yung buhay ni Jullebee," he added. (They are waiting for the moral damages. Life was lost. They are grateful that justice was served considering the manner of how Jullebee was killed. Even if there's imprisonment, it could not bring back Jullebee's life.) The accused has 30 days to appeal the judgement to the Court of First Instance. The burned body of 35-year-old Ranara was found in the desert in January. The 17-year-old son of her employer was arrested in connection with the crime. The accused was also reported to have raped and impregnated Ranara. Kuwaiti Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has promised in January that Ranara's killer would be punished for the crime. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
