Armed Forces to hire 12,000 displaced OFWs
MANILA, Philippines - Overseas Filipino workers who lost their jobs due to the global financial crisis could seek employment with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
AFP public affairs chief Lt. Col. Ernesto Torres said they could hire at least 12,000 displaced OFWs – and even their dependents – as auto mechanics, construction workers, nurses, psychologists, clerks, computer operators, and data encoders for six months.
Torres said this is in accordance with Executive Order 782, which mandates all government agencies to set aside 1.5 percent of their budget for 2009 to accommodate the affected OFWs that are registered with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Fifteen percent of the AFP’s P13 billion operating expenses this year amount to P195 million, Torres noted.
“At P8,000 per month (salary) for six months, the AFP may hire 12,188 persons," he said.
Torres said they are in the process of accounting the number of temporary personnel that can be accommodated by various military units nationwide. He said the target is to hire workers by June.
Applicants would undergo screening to validate their qualifications in the military, Torres said.
“We will accommodate these workers as long as they are DOLE-registered displaced workers," he added. - GMANews.TV
