Globe Asiatique founder Delfin Lee arrested

(Updated 10:34 p.m.) Globe Asiatique founder Delfin Lee was brought to the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame Thursday after earlier being arrested at a hotel in Manila over a  P6.6-billion syndicated estafa case.

Lee, who is accused of using fake documents to secure billions in pesos' worth of loans for "ghost" borrowers, had been at large for months.

Lee was arrested by PNP Task Force Tugis at around 7 p.m. outside Hyatt Hotel in Malate, Manila, Ivan Mayrina reported on GMA News' “State of the Nation.”

Lee had been among the government's "top" fugitives alongside former Army general Jovito Palparan, Dinagat Rep. Ruben Ecleo, and New People’s Army (NPA) leaders Benito Tiamzon and Jorge Madlos.

Police Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor, PNP spokesman, said in a report over dzBB Thursday night that Lee had been subject to surveillance since last year.

He said Lee had been tailed to the Hyatt Hotel and was arrested with the help of the Manila Police District.

Lee's camp had asked the Court of Appeals to quash a warrant issued by San Fernando (Pampanga) Regional Trial Court Branch 42 against Lee.

The CA quashed the warrant but the police said the Home Development Mutual Fund, or the Pag-IBIG Fund, asked the Supreme Court to reverse that decision.

Police added the Court of Appeals said in February that it recognizes the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to decide on the matter of the warrant against Lee.

"As of now, the warrant of arrest is valid and existing," Senior Superintendent Mayor said.

Lee will be brought to the PNP Headquarters in Camp Crame tonight and will be brought to the PNP General Hospital for a checkup, Mayrina reported.  Elizabeth Marcelo/BM/JDS/KG, GMA News
