Pinoy academic receives prestigious Marie Curie Fellowship

For his impressive masteral research, an assistant professor from the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) has been awarded with a prestigious PhD fellowship by the European Commission.

Asst. Prof. Diego Maranan was granted the Marie Curie Action (MCA) Fellowship for a PhD in music neurotechnology, according to an article on the UPOU website.

The grant came a year after his presentation at the Plymouth University in the United Kingdom, where he was urged by faculty members to apply for a PhD program.

“It was simultaneously surprising, delightful, and unnerving [to be offered the fellowship],” Maranan said in the article. “I did end up applying, and was accepted as a Marie Curie fellow.”

Maranan is a full-time faculty member at UPOU’s Bachelor of Multimedia (BAMMS) program.

Maranan's presentation last Nov. 2013 focused on “the relationships between movement techniques, technology, and perceptual cognition in three urban dance styles: liquid, digitz, and finger tutting,” the UPOU said.

MCA fellowships are open to researchers of all ages and levels of experience around the world.

From 2007 to 2014, the MCA has accepted 24 Filipino researchers, though no Filipino organizations have participated in it. — Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
