Pinoys in Japan advised to keep safe from Typhoon Vongfong

Filipinos in Japan have been advised to take safety precautions as Typhoon Ompong (Vongfong) changed course and is now heading there.

In an announcement posted on its website Thursday, the Philippine Embassy in Japan said the typhoon is very powerful and is expected to reach Japan in the coming days.

The embassy also advised them to monitor local news reports and to heed the warnings of local and national officials in Japan.

It advised Filipinos in Japan to log on to the websites of their prefectures and to the site of the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The embassy likewise posted emergency hotlines including:

-- Philippine Embassy, Tokyo: 080-4928-7979
-- Philippine Consulate General, Osaka: 090-4036-7984
-- Philippine Honorary Consulate General, Naha City, Okinawa: 098-892-5486

Earlier Thursday, PAGASA said Ompong had changed course and is heading for Japan, though it will linger in the Philippine Area of Responsibility until at least Saturday.

PAGASA also said Ompong is not likely to make landfall over the Philippines, though it may cause big waves. — Joel Locsin/VC/KBK, GMA News
