HK announces $100 pay hike for foreign household helpers

HONG KONG—The city has announced a $100-hike in the minimum allowable wage for foreign domestic helpers here.
In a statement, the government said the new MAW is $4,310 or a 2.4-percent increase from the present amount $4,210. The food allowance was also hiked by $42 to $1037.
The hikes will be implemented under contracts signed by helpers and their employers on or after October 1.
"In accordance with the established practice, we have carefully considered Hong Kong’s general economic and labor market situations over the last year, as reflected through a basket of economic indicators, including the relevant income movement and price change in this year’s review,” the statement said.
It added that the increase also reflected the city's economic outlook and the need to strike a balance between the needs of the employers and the foreign domestic workers. — LBG, GMA News
