Duterte on Trump immigrant policy: I trust in his judgment
President Rodrigo Duterte said he trusts in the judgment of American president-elect Donald Trump when it comes to the United States policy on immigration.
Duterte made the remarks on Tuesday before reporters over dinner in MalacaƱang.
"I trust in his judgment that he would be fair in the matter of the treatment of illegal immigrants. I cannot talk for the illegals because whether President Trump or anybody else for that matter, an illegal is always illegal. He is subject at any time to a deportation," Duterte said.
Trump was elected on a platform of tighter rules on immigration, promising to build a wall at the Mexican border to keep illegal immigrants out. In an interview to be aired on Sunday, Trump has said he will keep his vow to immediately deport as many as three million undocumented migrants after taking office.
Duterte's labor secretary Silvestre Bello III, meanwhile, has said Trump's policy will only have a minimal effect on Filipinos working in the States since most OFWs in the US are legally employed.
Meanwhile, Duterte expressed hope that he would have a good relationship with Trump.
"Oh I'm sure. Wala man kaming away. I can always be a friend to anybody especially to a president, chief executive of another country," Duterte said. —JST, GMA News
