Middle East still top OFW destination: job portal

MANILA - Middle East countries are still the top destinations for overseas Filipino workers, a study released Wednesday showed.
Six countries in the Middle East: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman, have the most number of job postings for Filipinos abroad, overseas jobs website WorkAbroad.ph said.
Of the 117,696 OFW jobs offered from January to September 2016, 46,026 or 39 percent are in Saudi Arabia, the study said.
Demand for Filipino workers from private companies in Saudi Arabia remains high despite the drop in oil prices, WorkAbroad.ph business unit head Rhea Suiza said.
Qatar has the second highest number of jobs for OFWs with 11,991 postings, followed by United Arab Emirates with 6,670 and Kuwait with 3,456.
Bahrain has 2,433 jobs for Filipinos overseas while Oman has 1,950.
There are 1,225 job postings in the US. Demand for Filipino workers could slow down over US President-elect Donald Trump's protectionist stand, according WorkAbroad.ph.
"There might be an effect on demand for OFWs, but let's hope for the best," said Suiza.
Suiza said aside from Middle East countries and the US, other countries that need services of Filipinos include New Zealand and Germany.

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
