TORONTO City, Ontario, Canada – Philippine Ambassador to Canada Petronila Garcia said that Filipinos remain the major source of immigrants for Canada and could reach 1 million in the coming years.
Based on 2016 statistics, Garcia said the strong Filipino population in Canada has reached at least 830,000 immigrants and 50,000 more were accepted in 2017.
“Marami ho talagang nag-a-apply. The Philippines is the number one source of immigrants of Canada (at) mahigit 50,000 ang tinanggap nila last year and we will continue to be one of their sources of immigrants,” Garcia told two Filipino reporters in an interview at the Philippine Consulate General office here.
“Sa ngayon po based on the 2016 statistics, there are 830,000 Filipinos in Canada. If every year tatanggap sila ng 50,000, eh one million na ang Filipinos and that means talagang they are welcoming Filipinos here,” said Garcia following reports of the projected million jobs that are expected to go unfilled across the nation in the coming years.
But Garcia advised Filipinos to go through the proper process of migration so as not to fall victim to illegal recruitment.
“Pero dapat nasa tamang proseso,” said Garcia who earlier cautioned Filipinos against being victimized by illegal recruiters, saying better opportunities require patience by waiting for the Canadian government to announce in their official websites the vacant positions here.
Earlier, Ryan Koeslag, executive vice president (EVP) of Mushrooms Canada, bared that that there will be a shortage of labor in Canada’s thriving $1 billion mushrooms industry, at least 700 mushroom pickers or harvesters.
Koeslag made the disclosure on the sidelines of Sunday’s gala night here for the inauguration of A & L Hammer Training Center for Agricultural Workers owned by Lily Hammer, president and chief executive officer of A & L Hammer Training Center or a Toronto-based human resources company involved in the training and education of agricultural workers.
He said that their group will work with the Canadian government to expedite the issuance of job orders.
