Pinoys in Hawaii told to prepare for Hurricane Lane
Filipinos in Hawaii have been advised to take the necessary precautions and prepare for Hurricane Lane and the heavy rains and life-threatening winds it may cause.
In an advisory on Thursday (Manila time), the Philippine Consulate General urged the Filipino community to prepare a 14-day emergency supply of the following recommended items:
- water,
- non-perishable food that does not require cooking,
- radio,
- flashlights,
- spare batteries,
- whistle (to signal for help)
- personal items,
- medicines,
- children’s and pet’s needs
The Filipinos were also told to heed all the warnings and advice of Hawaii State and Federal government authorities concerning the hurricane and the specific warnings for their area.
Filipino nationals in the affected areas were likewise advised to inform the Philippine Consulate General — which will have normal operations unless there is an announcement that it will be closed — to update their relatives in the Philippines of their conditions.
The US Central Pacific Hurricane Center downgraded Hurricane Lane to a Category 4, the second-strongest on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of wind intensity.
Bearing 155-mile per hour (250 km/h) winds, it threatened to dump as much as 20 inches (50 cm) of rain over parts of the islands, triggering major flash flooding and landslides.
Hawaii is already coping with the three-month eruption of Kilauea volcano on the Big Island, which was expected to start feeling the force of Lane's driving rains by late Wednesday afternoon. —KBK, GMA News
