Social Welfare and
Development Secretary Virginia Orogo on Saturday said social workers have been
assisting undocumented Filipino workers upon their arrival from Malaysia.
"Ang DSWD
[Department of Social Welfare and Development] nag-aabang sa Pilipinas para
maproseso sila. Ike-case study para malaman kung saan sila pupunta, ano 'yung
mga family nila, 'yung kahihinatnan nila," Orogo said in an interview on
Super Radyo dzBB.
They are given fare
so they can go home to their families. "Kung kailangan nilang magtrabaho o
negosyo, inaalalayan sila ng social workers. Upon arrival po 'yan (stress
debriefing). Sa airport mismo, kinakausap ng social worker natin," she
said.
Orogo said the
Department of Foreign Affairs is assisting the undocumented workers in
Malaysia.
The Department of
Labor and Employment is also helping the deported workers since the assumption
is they went to Malaysia to seek employment.
At least 203
undocumented Filipinos workers from Malaysia arrived at the
port in Zamboanga City on Thursday.
The group is the
third batch of workers who availed of the amnesty program offered by the
Malaysian government crackdown on illegal migrants.
Orogo said there
are an estimated 400,000 undocumented Filipino workers in Malaysia but it is
still being determined if all of them will be granted amnesty by the Malaysian
government.
She said the
Philippine Embassy has helped process the immigration papers of 5,844
undocumented workers in Malaysia.
Orogo added that
they need more social workers to assist the arriving undocumented
workers. —KG, GMA News
