Torture rap filed vs Saudi employer who forced OFW to drink bleach
MANILA - Saudi authorities have filed a torture complaint against an employer who allegedly forced an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) to drink household bleach, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday.
Agnes Mancilla, a 35-year-old native of Infanta, Quezon, sustained internal injuries from the incident and was placed under intensive care in April.
The DFA, in a statement, said the case will go to full trial and the employer may be sentenced to a prison term, including lashing and financial compensation, if found guilty.
Mancilla told authorities that her employer forced her to drink the chemical after she made a mistake in making tea.
Her employer also allegedly made her work for about 20 hours a day and only gave her coffee for meals.
When Consul General Edgar Badajos visited her at the hospital, Mancilla was skin and bones and also bore injuries in some parts of her body.
Based on government estimates, more than 2 million Filipinos are working in the Middle East often as domestic helpers, construction workers, engineers, and nurses.
