Taiwan investigators arrest Fil-Am linked to Hawaii killing – report
A Filipino-American suspected of the killing an 88-year-old man in Hawaii was arrested in Taiwan, a Taiwanese news site reported Saturday afternoon.
Taiwan's Central News Agency reported the Fil-Am suspect was arrested Firday while transiting through Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport.
Operatives from Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau intercepted the Fil-Am at the Philippine Airlines counter, then was transferred to the National Immigration Agency for holding and expatriation.
The arrest was the first successful joint operation between Taiwan and US authorities since the two signed an anti-crime agreement in December 2011.
US agents are expected to arrive in Taiwan Jan. 13 to fetch the Fil-Am, who is accused of shooting Amby Cruz, 88, at a New Year's party on Dec. 31, 2013.
Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau, had received a tip from the Federal Bureau of Investigation that the suspect arrived in Taiwan.
The FBI had said that the alleged shooter would arrive at Taoyuan International Airport on Friday morning and was transferring to a flight bound for Manila in the afternoon.
The suspect has refused to answer questions regarding the shooting, adding the trip to the Philippines was unrelated to the FBI case. The suspect added the trip back to Manila was because a relative had died. — DVM, GMA News
