Online survey seeks OWWA changes

MANILA, Philippines - An advocacy group of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) has launched an online campaign to restructure the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and improve the service to migrant workers.

Ellene Sana, executive director of the Center for Migrants Advocacy (CMA), is urging OFWs to visit and answer questions on their on-line survey regarding the government agency's mandate, particularly the OWWA membership.

Sana said part of the campaign is to draft a legislative proposal that they will submit to Congress to replace the Omnibus Policies and to restructure the OWWA organization.

“OWWA is your organization – it was created for your protection, and holds a fund for your benefit! Therefore, your opinion on OWWA is very important in deciding what OWWA should be," the statement added.

Among the questions in the survey are:

- Do you think OWWA membership should continue to be mandatory for overseas workers whose contracts are processed by the POEA?;

- Do you think that OWWA benefits should be limited to OWWA members who pay the membership fee?;

- How long do you think OWWA membership should last?;

- Are you aware that OWWA offers Life Insurance, Disability and Burial Benefits; Education, Training and Scholarship Programs, including (EDSP), (SESP), (SUP), the DOLE-OWWA Tulay Microsoft Project, and the Tuoloy-Aral Project; Repatriation programs for distressed OFWs and their families; Reintegration programs; Loans; and Workers Assistance and On-site Services? and;

- Do you think OFWs have enough representation on the OWWA Board? - Fidel R. Jimenez, GMANews.TV
