Family of OFW in death row in UAE appeals for help
The family of the overseas Filipino worker who was sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates has appealed for help, a TV report said.
A report on 24 Oras Weekend on Sunday quoted the mother of Jennifer Dalquez as saying poverty forced her daughter to work overseas as a domestic helper.
"Papatayin nilang kusa ang anak ko. Walang kasalanan 'yan," Dalquez's mother, Rajima, said.
She added: "Please tulungan niyo po ako. Sa lahat ng may kapangyarihan po... Sising-sisi talaga siya. Kahit kami, hindi namin matanggap."
Dalquez was meted the death penalty by Dubai's Al Ain trial court last May 20 for allegedly killing her employer in December 2014.
A separate report on Unang Balita on Monday said Dalquez insists that she stabbed her employer and killed him out of self-defense after he tried to rape her.
In a text message to GMA News, Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Charles Jose said the embassy there "has extended all necessary assistance" to Dalquez including hiring a lawyer for her.
"The embassy will assist OFW Dalquez appeal her sentence. The family of OFW Dalquez has been informed of these developments," Jose said.
In an interview with Unang Balita, Jose said, "We have ways to go pa po sa kasong ito."
"Matagal pa po ito, kasi 'yung kaniyang conviction ay sa trial court. So tutulungan siya ng embassy na mag-appeal. Meron pa po ito sa Supreme Court... So may pag-asa pa po na pwedeng ma-overturn 'yung kaniyang conviction," he said.
The sentence comes barely a month after Mary Jane Veloso was granted temporary reprieve by the Indonesian government, after she was supposed to be executed over drug charges.According to the DFA, there are some 88 Filipinos in death row around the world. —Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/KG, GMA News
