Pinay in UAE toy-gun rob try sentenced to 7 years in jail

A Filipina who tried to rob a money exchange facility in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates was sentenced to seven years in prison for the botched crime.

The Criminal Court in Abu Dhabi also ordered the 33-year-old Filipina deported after she serves her sentence, UAE news site Gulf News reported late Monday.

It noted that while the Filipina used a plastic toy gun, her act was still considered coercion and disturbing public security.

On the other hand, the court also ordered an added two months' jail time for her for overstaying her visa.

Court records also showed the Filipina had revealed only a part of the toy gun to disguise its true nature.

But the robbery attempt was foiled when an employee grabbed the Filipina from behind and made her drop the toy.

Records also showed the Filipina wore the Emirati national dress, including a niqab (face cover) and gloves, to hide her identity.

The Filipina admitted to the charges against her, saying she had no job and her debts were racking up at the time. Police found she had some Dh140,000 in debts.

separate report on Khaleej Times said the court decreed that the use of a fake gun did not relieve the Filipina of the crime since what matters is the intent of robbery.

Khaleej Times noted that in a previous hearing where the judge asked the Filipina why she entered and left the exchange many times before the robbery bid, she said she got cold feet. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
