Internet voter registration system rolled out for Pinoys in the Americas

Filipinos aged 18 and up who will be in the Americas from April 9 to May 9, 2016 may now avail of the iRehistro program, a system allowing overseas Filipinos to register and vote in the 2016 presidential election online.

Philippine embassies, Foreign Service Posts (FSP), and the Philippine Consulate General in the following areas rolled out the service on May 13 as endorsed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA):

Washington
Brasilia
Buenos Aires
Mexico
Ottawa
Santiago
Agana
Chicago
Honolulu
Los Angeles
New York
San Francisco
Toronto
Vancouver

Registrants may go to Comelec or iRehistro's website to fill out registration forms and schedule their appointments with the nearest Philippine service post.

iRehistro has also been approved in Middle East and Africa. It was pilot-tested in Madrid in September 2014.

"Overseas Filipinos in the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa region now have the option of filling up the forms from the comfort of their homes, workplace, internet café, or anywhere they have access to reliable internet connection," the DFA said.

"The optional appointment feature of the system allows for better time management since it provides them an easy way to schedule their personal appearance at a FSP or Mobile/Field registration site," it added..

Comelec hopes that this system will result in "faster processing times" and "potentially more registrants per day."

The voter registration period ends on October 31, 2015. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
